Open Water Dives
Each student must complete six (6) open water checkout dives to finish the open water certification.

These dives will be completed over two days. Students will use the skills they learned in the pool during Phase One (Classroom and Pool Sessions) to showcase comfort and confidence in their skills in an open water setting (ocean, lake, or quarry).
Day 1
Dive 1– Snorkeling
1. Putting on a Total Snorkeling System
2. Buoyancy and Weight System Adjustment
3. Snorkel and Mask Clearing
4. Locating and Dumping the Weight System (Quick Draw Method)
5. Establishing Positive Buoyancy at the Surface (Oral Inflation, Bobbing Method)
6. Rescue Skills (Approach, Cramp Removal and Tows)
7. Surfacing
8. Deep Water Exit 9.
Dive 2 - Scuba
1. Independently assemble a Total Diving System.
2. Put on a scuba unit with the assistance of a buddy.
3. Perform a complete pre-dive check on a Total Diving System with a buddy.
4. Establish neutral buoyancy while floating at eye level by holding a normal breath with an empty BC.
5. With a buddy, safely descend to a given depth.
6. Move through the water in a neutral position using only the breathing cycle.
7. Retrieve a second-stage regulator while underwater.
8. Clear a fully flooded mask while underwater.
9. Safely ascend from depth and establish positive buoyancy at the surface.
10. Maintain neutral buoyancy during a safety stop at the end of a dive.
11. Perform a safe and controlled exit from deep water with a buddy based on physical ability and the current environmental conditions.
12. Disassemble a Total Diving System.
Dive 3 - Scuba
1. Independently assemble a Total Diving System.
2. Put on a scuba unit with the assistance of a buddy.
3. Perform a complete pre-dive check on a Total Diving System with a buddy.
4. Establish neutral buoyancy while floating at eye level by holding a normal breath with an empty BC.
5. With a buddy, safely descend to a given depth.
6. Comfortably remove, replace, and clear a mask while underwater.
7. Share air in a stationary position as both donor and receiver.
8. Safely ascend from depth and establish positive buoyancy at the surface.
9. Maintain neutral buoyancy during a safety stop at the end of a dive.
10. Perform a safe and controlled exit from deep water with a buddy based on physical ability and the current environmental conditions.
11. Disassemble a Total Diving System 12.
Day 2
Dive 4 - Scuba
1. Independently assemble a Total Diving System.
2. Put on a scuba unit with the assistance of a buddy.
3. Perform a complete pre-dive check on a Total Diving System with a buddy.
4. Enter the water using the giant stride entry method while wearing a Total Diving System.
5. Establish neutral buoyancy while floating at eye level by holding a normal breath with an empty BC.
6. With a buddy, safely descend to a given depth.
7. Safely ascend to the surface while sharing air as both receiver and donor.
8. Remove and replace a weight system at the surface.
9. Safely ascend from depth and establish positive buoyancy at the surface.
10. Maintain neutral buoyancy during a safety stop at the end of a dive.
11. Perform a safe and controlled exit from deep water with a buddy based on physical ability and the current environmental conditions.
12. Disassemble a Total Diving System. 13. 14.
Dive 5 – Scuba
1. Independently assemble a Total Diving System.
2. Put on a scuba unit with the assistance of a buddy.
3. Perform a complete pre-dive check on a Total Diving System with a buddy.
4. Establish neutral buoyancy while floating at eye level by holding a normal breath with an empty BC.
5. With a buddy, safely descend to a given depth without a visual reference.
6. Practice a simple reciprocal compass course with a dive buddy while underwater.
7. Independently remove and replace a scuba unit at the surface.
8. Maintain neutral buoyancy during a safety stop at the end of a dive.
9. Deploy a surface marker buoy while at the surface.
10. Perform a safe and controlled exit from deep water with a buddy based on physical ability and the current environmental conditions.
11. Disassemble a Total Diving System.
Dive 6 – Scuba Your first dive as a Certified Diver!
1. Independently assemble a Total Diving System.
2. Provide your Instructor with a dive plan, created with the assistance of a buddy.
3. Put on a scuba unit with the assistance of a buddy.
4. Perform a complete pre-dive check on a Total Diving System with a buddy.
5. Establish neutral buoyancy while floating at eye level by holding a normal breath with an empty BC.
6. With a buddy, safely descend to a given depth.
7. Execute your dive plan.
8. Maintain neutral buoyancy during a safety stop at the end of a dive.
9. Perform a safe and controlled exit from deep water with a buddy based on physical ability and the current environmental conditions.
10. Disassemble a Total Diving System.
